The Check Engine Light Turns On
If your check engine light illuminates, it doesn't automatically indicate that your engine is on the verge of a catastrophic problem. However, you'll want to get to the shop for computerized diagnostics so that any emerging issues can be identified and resolved before they worsen. Common reasons the check engine light turns on include problems with oxygen sensors, mass airflow sensors, ignition coils, and catalytic converters.
Common Signs of an Engine Problem
Abnormal engine noises are cause for concern. Knocking and tapping sounds can be caused by various problems, including bad rod bearings, a lean air/fuel mixture, and insufficient lubrication. Old spark plugs could also cause a knocking noise, and should be replaced if they're causing this symptom.
Power loss could mean that a serious problem is brewing. You don't necessarily need to worry if your older car with high miles has slowly lost a bit of power over the years. But a sudden and substantial loss of engine power could mean you have worn-out pistons or another significant problem. But power loss could also occur due to a less serious issue, like a fuel or air filter that is all gunked-up and needs to be replaced.
Also, you'll want to get to the shop if you notice discolored/excessive exhaust smoke. The color of the smoke can give you a clue about the underlying issue. Black smoke suggests that too much fuel is being burned. Blue-tinted smoke is a symptom of an oil leak. White smoke is a sign of an internal coolant leak and could indicate a blown head gasket.
